Arrest Warrants

What is an arrest warrant and why was I not arrested immediately?

While the police have the authority to arrest once they have reasonable grounds to do so, there is no absolute requirement that they must arrest a suspect immediately once they have obtained reasonable grounds.

Very often the police do not arrest a suspect immediately because of the nature of the suspected offence or surrounding circumstances. The police may believe that further investigation would be helpful to substantiate their grounds. The police may also delay an arrest even after forming reasonable grounds because they reasonably believe that to not delay the arrest would compromise the integrity of an ongoing investigation.

In certain situations, the police may intend to effect an arrest but just cannot find the suspect. Therefore, an arrest warrant is taken out on the suspect.
